Erectile Dysfunction

The first thing to know about erectile dysfunction (ED) is that those who experience it should not feel alone. A recent study found that 52% of respondents between the ages of 40 and 70 had some degree of ED. Those with ED may feel anxious or depressed about their condition, but there is no need to despair; multiple treatments are available, including a revolutionary new therapy called the P-shot that treats ED with the body’s own blood cells and growth factors.

What are the Causes of Erectile Dysfunction?

The idea that the cause of ED is all in one’s head is an outdated myth along with the notion that experiencing it is somehow shameful. ED is a complex condition that can have multiple mental and physical causes. Conditions that can contribute to ED include:

  • hypogonadism (sometimes called “low T”)
  • heart disease
  • high blood pressure
  • high cholesterol
  • diabetes
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • sleep disorders
  • metabolic syndrome
  • other chronic illnesses

Certain medications and medical procedures–such as surgeries that affect the pelvic area, or prostate cancer treatment–can also play a role in ED. Substance abuse and use of tobacco and alcohol have also been associated with ED, as has obesity. Mental illnesses and other psychological factors, including stress and relationship problems, can also contribute to ED.

Symptoms of Erectile Dysfunction

Symptoms of ED include persistent difficulty becoming erect, difficulty staying erect, and/or decreased sexual desire. It is important to note that rare or occasional erectile issues may not constitute ED, but you should still see your doctor if you have concerns about your sexual health, have one of the health conditions listed above that has the potential to cause ED, or are experiencing other sexual problems like premature ejaculation.

ED Problems

Erectile dysfunction does not occur in a vacuum; in can cause other problems in one’s life. Complications can include a dissatisfying sex life, inability to impregnate, low self-esteem, and, in the event that one’s partner is not understanding, relationship problems. ED can also cause stress or “performance anxiety”, which can actually worsen ED symptoms.

Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction

Improving overall health (through exercise, quitting smoking, stress reduction, etc.) or treating an underlying condition that is causing ED is sometimes sufficient to alleviate the issue. When that is not the case, there are many treatments available.

An especially promising and effective ED therapy is the Priapus shot (“P-shot”), which involves treatment of the penile tissue with a serum of platelets and growth factor proteins isolated from the patient’s own blood. Other treatments include medications, pumps, surgery, or even counseling if the ED is caused by stress.

Priapus Shot / P-Shot

The P-shot is a relatively new ED treatment, but it has already helped many patients. The procedure begins with your doctor drawing a small amount of blood and spinning it in a centrifuge to isolate the platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which contains platelets and growth factors. The PRP is then injected into three areas of the penis with a small gauge needle. The PRP will stimulate growth of new blood vessels and collagen, which not only helps with ED, but can increase penis size. This shot is not only natural and non-pharmaceutical, but effective for ED caused by illnesses. It is also almost entirely risk-free because it uses cells from the patient’s own body.

Medications / Pills / Creams

Other treatments include medications – usually pills or topical creams–that improve blood flow to the penis by acting on the chemical nitric oxide.

Vacuum Devices / Pumps

Less well-known treatments include vacuum constriction devices, also called “penis pumps”, which help the penis become erect by creating a vacuum around the penis and stay erect through use of a constriction ring.

Penile Implants

A good option for those whose ED is unlikely to improve naturally is the penile implant or prosthesis, which involves a malleable (bendable) or inflatable implant surgically inserted into the erection chambers of the penis.

Vascular Reconstructive Therapy

For severe cases, erectile dysfunction doctors may recommend vascular reconstructive therapy, which bypasses blocked arteries that are interfering with the patient’s inability to maintain an erection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can ED be Cured?

There is no magic bullet for ED, but it is curable in some cases, and many treatments are available to alleviate the symptoms.

What Is the Main Cause of ED?

There is no one main culprit when it comes to causing ED. The most common causes, however, are heart disease, diabetes, medication side effects, hypogonadism (“low T”), and neurological issues.

Can Masturbation Cause Erectile Dysfunction?

That’s a myth! Masturbation doesn’t impact erectile function either way.

What Is the Best Treatment for Erectile Dysfunction?

As with many diseases, the best treatment for ED really depends on the patient. When seeking treatment for ED, a patient is most likely to first be prescribed pills, and then the doctor may adjust the treatment depending on how effective the pills are.
